AGING, GLYCATION, SPORT: looking for the right dosage.

Well controlled, physical exercises would contribute to the good aging of tissues rich in collagen.

Regular physical endurance exercise throughout life is known to oppose the deterioration of cardiovascular and metabolic functions and mortality in general. At the same time, it is accepted that excessive sports practices have the opposite effect.

An exploratory study (1) involving 4 groups, young people vs. elderly people, with and without sports practice, shows that at any age a sports practice based on regular endurance running inhibits glycation and thus counteracts the aging process of collagen-rich tissues.

Thus, the tendons, key organs for physical exercise, made up of collagen with very slow renewal rates and therefore core targets of glycation, see their aging slowed down during physical exercise.

The level and type of physical exercise needed to slow aging remains to be clarified, but regular, medium-intensity endurance running seems like a good lead.
