GLYCATION

BEST OF/ Sugar: from addiction to accelerated aging

24Glycation, boosted by the growing overconsumption of sugar linked to its addictive nature, leads to a pandemic of accelerated aging.

The notion of addiction is clinically defined as “a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence” (1).

The neurochemical criteria of addiction call, for their part, in particular on the release of dopamine, “hormone of immediate pleasure” or even opioids, substances that can calm pain.

By meeting both the clinical and neurochemical criteria for addiction, sugar clearly displays itself as an addictive substance (2). This dependence would explain the ever-increasing and yet already too high consumption of sugar.

Knowing that sugar is the fuel of glycation, one of the main mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases, sugar addiction inevitably leads to a pandemic of accelerated aging.
