METABOLIC SYNDROME: towards a catastrophic situation?

Metabolic syndrome is not a disease. It is a series of health problems that greatly increase the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease, weakening the immune system (1) and leading to accelerated general aging.

Its rapid and borderless development announces a global health disaster.

We talk about metabolic syndrome when we observe in a patient with abdominal obesity, at least 2 of the following factors:

Hyperglycemia, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure.

Metabolic syndrome affects 25% to 30% of the adult population in Europe and increases with age. It progresses rapidly and reaches more and more young people. Most people with metabolic syndrome ignore their condition.

Extrinsic factors, diet with excess sugars and a sedentary lifestyle as well as epigenetic factors are the main causes of the metabolic syndrome. Numerous studies show that glycation is directly associated with metabolic syndrome (2).

The metabolic syndrome can be controlled by adopting, at its first signs, a specific lifestyle: daily physical exercises, avoid sugary foods. Nutritional supplementation against glycation can help control a metabolic syndrome.
